Since the major issue we currently face is electricity surges during the day, using compressed air to help smooth out energy use may work. Store compressed air using wind turbines during the evening, use the compressed air to power turbines during peak energy consumption periods to help meet immediate demands. Sounds logical to me.
Not sure about the last idea, using road traffic to compress a piston which forces air past a generator. Too many potential issues, such as car weight (for compression of the piston), rain issues ( since there is a chamber that is opened and closed), maintenance (close the freeway to address), and underground storage of turbine under major freeways.
