Conservation – Most Efficient Energy Producer

8 07 2008

Credit Suisse stated in an alternative energy report that by 2030 80% of new energy demands will be met through conservation efforts and 20% through new energy sources. Forbes.com posted an article that completely agrees.  Crazy to think about, but I tend to agree as well. Cars will use less gasoline, homes will install more energy efficient appliances, and hopefully consumers will begin to be aware of the impact of wastefulness. Don’t get me wrong, I am far from a dreamer on the topic. 20 % and 80% are relative numbers. They hold no solid numeric value. That could mean that we need to develop new energy technologies for 700 gigawatts of power by 2030, I do not know, but I do want to acknowledged that there is something to be said for improving the existing products we have.

Entrepreneurs (myself included), VC’s, Big Business, Government, Etc., we all need to develop several time horizons.  Most business ventures right now are banking on the next BIG invention.  Well what if that is not exactly right around the corner?  We need to remain focused on the now, the intermediate future, and the long term, developing technologies to make immediate positive strides as well as planning for future dramatic changes.  If we fail to be aware of current market conditions we may find ourselves too late to implement any change.
